The ovoid shape of greenish hardstone; one end being rounded, the other coming to a highly polished flattened head with still sharp cutting edge, an oval area to one side of the upper surface (shown in the first photo) polished smooth to enable easier handling. When holding this tool, the thumb rests easily and comfortably in this position. The point with ancient usage marks visible.
Condition: Minor loss to the upper end of the axe otherwise, intact and in excellent condition overall. Museum quality custom mount.

Provenance: Forming part of the James Stephan Snr. collection, and then by descent. Dr. Stephan was a US intelligence officer who also held a degree in archaeology. He was posted in the Anatolian region of Turkey in the late 1960's with the US government and during this time acquired his collection from excavation, dealers and villagers throughout the region.
