large upper portion of large Greek amphora with barnacle and coral encrustation.
Amphorae were used extensively in the ancient world to transport basic commodities, primarily wine, olive oil and olives. Many had stamps impressed on the handles to indicate personal names (ie: traders) origin (eg: city state ) or contents or all three.
Condition: Fragmentary as shown with heavy encrustation.
