A rectangular sandstone block with visible tool marks on the back, probably a fragment of a larger frieze. On the front of the piece, a finely carved figure emerges in high relief, standing on a pedestal in contrapposto on proper right leg, with proper left arm at side and proper right arm raised holding a mace over shoulder. The figure wears a thin garment around the waist and draped over the legs, a beaded belt, bracelets, and a beaded necklace. The face is carved with deep-set eyes and wide, arching eyebrows. The hair is pulled straight back and gathered in a large knot on top of the head.
Condition: Intact with age appropriate wear, overall in very good condition. Small loss to the nose and mouth of the figure. Museum quality custom mount.
Dimensions: Height 7 inches (17.8 centimeters), Depth 2.5 inches (6.4 centimeters)
Provenance: Private Virginia collection, acquired by descent.
